five indie games releasing in may

Indie Watch | May 2025

// It’s Gonna Be May

The snow has finally melted. Yahoo! April was a banger month for games (and movies, you see Sinners yet??). It’s also been very busy. This spring is jam-packed with video games as everyone tries to get their releases in early to avoid GTA VI.

May is no different. This month is full to the gills with intriguing indie games. It’s also the most diverse list – from a genre perspective – of any list since we started Indie Watch a few months ago.

Onward, to the games!

// Shotgun Cop Man

What: From the creator of My Friend Pedro comes the unhinged-looking Shotgun Cop Map. With the tagline, “GO TO HELL, ARREST SATAN,” you can probably guess the tone of this one.

Shotgun Cop Man is a 2D sidescroller where you blast enemies and project yourself forward both by shooting your weapons. A shot behind you shoots you forward or into the air. It’s certain to be a fast-paced rootin-tootin’ good time, if you have the coordination.

When: May 1, 2025

Who: DeadToast Entertainment

Where: Switch, PC

// Despelote

What: Despelote is a slice-of-life adventure with one of the most unique aesthetics I’ve seen in a video game. Explore Quito in this tale of youth brought to life with the magic of soccer.

That’s all I’ll say for now, since we have a review coming out for this one soon.

When: May 1, 2025

Who: Julián Cordero and Sebastian Valbuena

Where: PlayStation, Xbox Series, PC

// The Midnight Walk

What: You’ve likely seen this creepy, stop-motion style before with lost in random. Well they’re back again with The Midnight Walk, and this one looks stunning. It’ll be available both in standard and VR versions, giving players the options to be scared or very scared.

When: May 8, 2025

Who: Moonhood

Where: PlayStation, PC

// Monster Train 2

What: Would it be an Indie Watch without a roguelike deckbuider? Evidently not. Monster Train was very well received. Hopes are high for the sequel that drops later this month.

If you’re itching for Slay the Spire 2 and can’t wait, maybe check this one out in the meantime.

When: May 21, 2025

Who: Shiny Shoe

Where: Playstation, Xbox, Switch, PC

// Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown

What: Turn-based and Ninja Turtles come together for the first time. To pull from the game’s Steam page:

Inspired by the classic cartoon, you’ll experience a bold new approach to the world of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Splinter and Shredder are dead, and as the Turtles approach adulthood, they’re not just growing up… they’re growing apart. Battle the Foot Clan as a powerful new leader takes control in action-packed campaigns that showcase each Turtle individually. Carve through enemies in 20 constantly-mutating levels that grow, shrink, and add new threats with each turn, inspired by classic TMNT games!

When: May 22, 2025

Who: Strange Scaffold

Where: PC

// to a T

What: This game sparks so much joy. When it was revealed earlier this year, I couldn’t help but have a stupid grin on my face the whole time.

Explore a small, seaside town in a story that unfolds over a few days about a teen trying to fit in. We know there will be some chill exploration, minigames, and lots of T posing.
