Under The Radar Films of April

Under the radar can mean different things to different people. I certainly don’t want to presume that I know about more movies than you. I don’t know you! But I’m around enough to see which movies are being advertised more than others, so this is my list of movies that I think you are less likely to know are coming this month than let’s say A Minecraft Movie or Sinners. Hopefully at least one of these makes your list of movies that you might end up seeing that you hadn’t known about before. This is listed in chronological order.

The Luckiest Man in America

What: A film that covers the 1984 scandal where an ice cream truck driver figured out the inner mechanics of the game show Press Your Luck to win a record-breaking amount of money at the time, leading to CBS accusing him of cheating.

Why: I love game shows and I love movies about running scams. This just hits the sweet spot of the type of content I like combined with an interesting cast and premise. The main character being played by Paul Walter Hauser, who always nails comedic roles, fascinates me.

Who: It stars Paul Walter Hauser and Walton Goggins as well as I Think You Should Leave regular Patti Harrison.

Psycho Therapy: The Shallow Tale of a Writer Who Decided to Write About a Serial Killer

What: A black comedy about a retired serial killer who consults for an author writing about murders.

Why: I am always interested when a director who has a track record in another country (in this case Turkey) makes a Hollywood film. Generally, it’s a sign that that director has made enough of an impact in that other country that they could get a movie made in Hollywood. In this case, Tolga Karcelik is making one of my favourite genres that was the runner-up for the Audience Award at Tribeca Festival’s Narrative competition.

Who: It stars John Magaro, Steve Buscemi, and Britt Lower.

A Nice Indian Boy

What: A romantic comedy about a gay Indian man that brings his white male fiancé to meet his family, but the family isn’t homophobic, but rather has a harder time accepting the fiancé for being white. On top of that, the white man has Indian adoptive parents.

Why: I don’t generally gravitate towards romantic comedies, but when they add layers on it like this premise does, it makes it a lot more interesting to discover and let the feel-good waves of this genre wash over you as you learn more about people and cultures. Currently holds a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Who: It stars Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff, and is directed by Karan Soni’s real life partner Roshan Sethi.

The Uninvited

What: A comedy drama that on the surface seems like it is about a stranger crashing a party, leading to a comedy of errors, but under the surface it is a critique of ageism and gender bias in Hollywood.

Why: The film is about the pressures of aging in Hollywood and what someone’s identity is and how that is challenged over time to culminate in an exploration of who belongs in the revolving door of the movie industry. For someone who loves movies, I love seeing a critique and self-reflection of the industry that we didn’t used to get as much before. Currently holds a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Who: It stars Walton Goggins, Lois Smith, Elizabeth Reaser, Rufus Sewell, and Pedro Pascal.

Havoc

What: Havoc is an action film directed by Gareth Evans and stars Tom Hardy fighting through a criminal underworld to save a child as he untangles a political criminal conspiracy.

Why: I will be seated without any other information than Gareth Evans directing. The director of two of the best action films of this century – The Raid and The Raid 2 – doing his first action movie since those two? Yes please! Tom Hardy is also a great choice for this role where he’s a hardened detective badass – almost a typecast at this point. The only downside is having to watch this on Netflix instead of the big screen.

Who: It stars Tom Hardy, Forest Whitaker, and Timothy Olyphant. But most importantly, it is directed by Gareth Evans.

When: April 25, 2025

Where: Netflix
