Oscar trophy with Not An Accountant's profile picture edited onto the head

The 2025 NAAscar Nominees

I know what you’re wondering: why is there an article about car racing on GCR? First of all, why not? Secondly, no it’s not about Nascar. NAA is an abbreviation of Not An Accountant (that is my legal name), but it also serves as a play on words as “nah” combined with the Oscars.

The concept of this article is to do nominations for the Oscar categories but use none of the actual nominations for each category that the Oscars chose. For example, if a movie is nominated for best picture, I cannot nominate it for best picture also, but I could nominate that film for another category such as cinematography if it wasn’t nominated in that category by the Academy.

Now you may say that I can’t possibly do a great job of this because I haven’t watched the number of movies that Academy members have and therefore have big blindspots. To that I’d say that it has been well-documented that Academy members themselves often do not even watch all the movies they end up nominating. So if anything, I’m being a lot more ethical by limiting myself to movies I at least have watched and can legitimately vouch for in each category. My shortcoming will be that due to the limitations of how much I can watch and also my expertise, or lack thereof, in certain categories, I will not be doing as many categories as the Oscars. I have chosen a select few instead.

Finally, this is a companion piece to my article criticizing the Oscar nominations for 2025. One of my objectives is to try to address some of the issues I brought up in that article, most notably point 3 where I talk about the lack of genre representation. So without further ado, the nominees for the 2025 NAAscars, in alphabetical order, are:

The biggest winner of the NAAscar nominations is Longlegs with 5 nominations. Other winners include All We Imagine as Light and Furiosa with 4 nominations with A Different Man and Dune: Part Two garnering 3 each as well. My favourite part of doing this was being able to give a lot more attention to other genres like action and horror while also spotlighting films that got no attention at the actual Oscars.
